Getting the home office balance right
November, 2009

Most of us will have an image or dream of what a home office would look like. Something stylish, comfortable that combines the best of both worlds, work and home. In reality though it is extremely difficult to get the balance right between an efficient, personalised workspace and something that doesn't just remind you of an office block.

Here are some easy tips to help balance the personal with the practical in your home office:

1. Don't be afraid to make it cosy. The advantage of working at home is just that, it's your home, so don't feel like you have to build yourself a sterile cubicle in order to get any work done.

2. If you have the space then think about where you would have visitors in the office. It could be clients it could be your kids, either way plan that area into the layout of your home office.

3. Get some nice-looking shelves and cabinets to put your files and other work into. It will give the office a professional look, which is good if you'll be talking with clients, and also help you switch into organised work mode when you go into the room.

4. Design the space however you like to work, if it's in keeping with the business and isn't going to put off visiting clients then give it your own personal touch it's what home offices are all about. Or if it's for family use only keep in mind all people who will be using the space.

5. Invest in a proper ergonomic office desk chair, it will keep you comfortable and focused.

There are many more things you can do to combine a dedicated working space with your own personality so just think outside the box.
