Saving Energy In Your Home Office

Most businesses these days are taking measures to reduce their energy usage, so why not do the same with your home office? It might not be a massive corporation (yet) but you can still make a difference and also save some money on your energy bills.

- Buy products with the Energy Star certification as this ensures it makes efficient use of available energy. Computers, printers, scanners, fax machines, phones and monitors are all available with Energy Star approval.

- Use the new energy saving LED down lights.

- For your cabinetry specify green building materials, substrates such as MDF are available with a range of environmental impact ratings.

- Turn off any equipment in the when it's not in use, you'll find this will cut down your home office bills considerably, which is good for any business.

- Computers with the Energy Star label consume up to 70% less electricity than computers without the label. If you were thinking of updating your computer systems then try to track one down.

- In the case of a laptop, plug the AC adapter into an outlet with a switch. These kinds of adapters are constantly drawing power, even if the laptop is not attached to it.

- Check your equipment and the manuals for power-saving or energy-saving modes and activate these options.

- Turning off a monitor or putting it on sleep mode is always a safer option than waiting for the machine itself to go to sleep. It will be on for less time and therefore draw less electricity.

- Consider upgrading to a laptop, they use a lot less energy than desktop computers, not to mention being a lot easier to carry around.

So you'll notice that a lot of this comes down to common sense but really when it's this simple to cut down energy use and reduce your bills, why not make a change or two?
